This is the story of how, in 1875 and for the next 75 years, a small fleet of ships, paddle steamers and market boats, transformed life around the Kingsbridge estuary bringing the south hams from its rural past into the 20th century.
This was brought about by a group of concerned local traders and businessmen who saw the potential of this new means of transport and got together to form a company to finance and build the first boat.
